AIAXact Select Repro Workstations

The choice of the perfect repro workstation for any situation varies by budget, size, type of material to be digitized, functionality, degree of automation, and available space to house it. In a deliberate effort to meet most individual needs and budget points, AIA offers the largest selection of types and brands of copystands and repro workstations. Now, we have gone one step further and developed the AIAXact Select product line.

The AIAXact Select product line allows you to actually design your own system and set your budget limit by choosing system components manufactured to AIA specifications. Simply define your needs with the help of the "considerations" section of this form, choose a component that meets your needs, and submit to AIA for comment and pricing (or call us at 802-362-3169). The AIAXact Select line does not offer choices of scanning cameras, which can be found on this site under Fine Art Reproduction, or Digital Photography.

Component Considerations Choose
Base Table
  • The size of the base table sets the limit of the size of the material which can be scanned in one pass.
  • Choose a base size that accommodates your most common needs. Do not plan for the occasional exception, as it will increase your budget.
  • AIAXact bases can be upgraded via a trade-in program.

Type of Table
  • All AIAXact Select tables come with magnetic surfaces and magnet sets.
  • All AIAXact Select tables have common document size crop marks.
  • Vacuum tables are self-masking to reduce noise, and distribute power evenly regardless of the size of the material being scanned.
  • All AIAXact Select tables are vacuum upgradeable at any time.
  • Vacuums should not be used to hold down rolled fragile material. Library snakes, bean bags, or other devices should be used. Slight uneveness in the surface of the material being scanned will be compensated for by the depth of field of the scanner.
  • For book scanning only, select magnetic surface, since you do not need a vacuum and a book cradle can be placed directly on the table.

Table Height & Operation
  • Table height off the floor determines the distance between the Scan Back or Camera and the work to be scanned. The larger the size of the area to be scanned the greater the focal distance. This is important for both optical/mechanical and ergonomic reasons.
  • If the table height is fixed, not variable, all focus adjustments must be accomplished by moving the camera only. Thus, covering large areas may necessitate having the camera higher than you can reach to focus it without a ladder, and/or the use of wider angle lenses.
  • A fixed height for a 40X60" scan area is usually between 14 and 15.5 inches. Thus, each piece of art has to be laid down and adjusted with the operator always bending over.
  • Ergonomics are addressed by making the table height variable. AIAXact Select table legs are all level adjustable and come in 2 fixed sizes 15.5" and 24" high. AIAXact Select variable height legs can vary the table height from 15.5" to 31" in 2 modes: manual hydraulic via a hand crank, or with the press of a button via an electric motor.

Column (Rail)
  • Length of column dictates focal length and lens choice.
  • The higher the column the heavier and more rigid it has to be.
  • The column has a camera arm which extends from it and must place the lens in the optical center of the base.
  • Columns can be free standing by being anchored to base tables with special mechanisms.
  • Columns can be wall mounted with special hardware.
  • Wall mounts tend to lower the overall cost of a workstation by eliminating very heavy tables.
  • All AIAXact Select systems come with a Zig Align parallelism calibration kit to ensure precise parallelism essesential for sharp focus.
  • 40"X60 bases require a 60 column.
  • Because of their height, 60" columns should be motorized
  • AIAXact Select columns come with and without motorized 4X5 cameras for automated focusing.
  • Medium format and large format cameras using digital backs require heavy rails.
  • AIAXact Select Columns for 35mm cameras come in 40" and 50" sizes and are manually adjusted via a hand crank or vise grip release.

Lighting
  • Each of the lighting sources below have the following characteristics:
  • Flicker Free fluorescents come in 2 color temperatures, daylight and Tungsten. It provides smooth, even, soft lighting and throws no appreciable heat. Fixtures are large and bulky, and digital scanbacks require a considerable amount of light.
  • Dichroic Tungsten is an ordinary quartz Halogen light source with a color temperature of 3.2K. These fixtures are referred to as hot lights since they throw off a tremendous amount of heat and have a short "life" before needing to be changed. Dichroic Tungsten is a quartz Halogen lamp which has been coated with a special filter that reverses the flow of IR or heat away from the art work, but still produces a consideral amount of heat in the room they are in.
  • HID lights are relatively new. They produce an insignificant amount of heat and a tremendious amount of useable light without drawing a great deal of electricity. They also have an incredibly long bulb life.
  • HMI are pure daylight lights most commonly used in motion picture production. They are fragile, have short lives, may require warm-up periods, and are very costly.
  • Strobes are common flashes. They can only be used with 1 shot cameras or cameras that use Piezo Aperture displacement technology (1,4,16 shots). Please consider the ergonomic effect on operators required to produce 20 or more scans a day, at 16 flashes each, 5 days a week.
