LIGHTING

Simply put, light is everything.  Even the best camera or scanner will not produce optimum results without adequate lighting.  Lighting for reprographics is especially critical:

  • it must be as evenly distributed across the surface as possible;

  • it must hold color temperature consistently;

  • it must provide enough illumination to be able to set optimal exposures;

  • it should not pose a danger to artwork or operator with excessive emissions of UV or IR and,

  • it should be cost effective to maintain.

There are 4 basic types of lighting currently in use in image capture: Fluorescents, HMI, HID/CMD, and Tungsten. They differ in terms of the amount of light they throw off, color temperature choice, degree of heat emitted, UV emitted, and cost of running and replacement. The following table provides an overview:

TYPE HEAT UV TEMPS COST CHARACTERISTICS
FLUORESCENT LOW HIGH

UNLESS FILTERED

3.2K, 5.2k HIGH SMOOTH EVEN DIFFUSE LIGHT. BUT REQUIRES VERY LARGE FIXTURES TO PRODUCE ENOUGH LIGHT FOR GOOD EXPOSURES
HID LOW LOW 3.4K,5.6K LOW SMOOTH EVEN LIGHT AT LOW WATTAGE. LIGHT IS FOCUSABLE, LAMPS LAST 10-15,000 HRS., LOW ELECTRICAL DEMAND
TUNGSTEN HIGH MODERATE 3.2K HIGH VERY HOT LIGHTS, LOW RATIO OF IR TO ACTUAL LIGHT, SHORT BULB LIFE, HIGH ELECTRICAL DEMAND
HMI HIGH LOW 5k HIGH PURE SUNLIGHT. HIGH ELECTRICAL DEMAND AND HIGH BULB REPLACEMENT COSTS.
